Calder, Peter One of the TD’s oldest friends, Peter attended 2 Masters in 2010 and 11. Always smiling and a member of a number of Melbourne golf clubs more recently Victoria Golf Club, he provided a memorable comment during his first Masters Calcutta proceedings when questioning whether it was Monopoly money was being used in the bidding!
Cope, Kelvin A close mate of the TD’s from Riversdale Golf Club, Kelvin attended 2 Masters in 2015 and 16. With a smooth, rhythmical swing admired by many including the Masters participants, he was probably handicapped out of contention. However, with his great iron play, he managed a nearest the pin in his first attempt.
Dohnt, Trevor Invited from the MCC, Trevor has attended 11 Masters from 2010. His magnificent tennis skills have transferred to golf where the lefty won the jacket in 2016 with scores of 43 and finishing with a blistering 47!

Trevor had two runner-up efforts in 2013 and 18, and third places in 2011, 2023 and 2024.
Driscoll, Clive TD’s next door neighbour and champion friend from the MCC, our dearly departed legend Clive attended 18 Masters during 2002-23. Winning the first one in 2002 followed by one in 2006 and the last one he attended in 2023, along with captaining seven Ambrose Team victories, it was agreed to name the Ambrose competition, the Clive Driscoll Memorial Ambrose. Clive also won 11 long drives and 4 nearest the pins during his 18 Masters.

The twenty-one ball salute to honour him before commencing play in 2024 was something to remind us of his wonderful loyalty, generosity and friendship.
Dupe, Mark One of Clive’s close friends, brought Mark onboard, and he has attended 12 Masters since 2011 and has been a staunch advocate of the event during this time. He, along with Andrew Kennan and the Tournament Director, made the record dividend for the punters club on Cox Plate Day, bringing in around $5,000 for a first four. Mark won the event in 2017 and has an impressive record in the Ambrose event being in the winning team on 4 occasions.
Jack Foley A close friend of the TD’s attended one Masters in 2004, and whilst being part of the winning Ambrose team, decided that golf wasn’t his strong sport. He did make history along with Bruce Young by sitting in the golf cart that drove into the club house entrance at Murray Downs to the dismay of the receptionist.
Gibson, Ray Invited from EMC Corporation which supplied NAB with most of its computer storage, Ray attended 3 Masters during 2009-14. Ray won the event in 2010 at Tocumwal, with an excellent second round of 43 points which blitzed the field.

Hay, Mac Invited from the Melbourne Business School where Clive studied under him, Mac attended 4 Masters during 2013-18. A prodigiously long hitter from Peninsula and The National Golf Clubs, his greatest highlight at the Masters in 2014 when playing in the last Ambrose team with all the others watching, managed to sink the second shot into the 9th hole at Murray Downs to have the TD’s team win the event.
Holding, Marshall Invited from the MCC, Riversdale Golf Club member Marshall attended 8 Masters during 2011-19. A long hitter who was known to have hit the roof of the Club House at Tocumwal hitting his second into the 18th hole of the Presidents Course which is no mean feat. Marshall also came within 12 inches of a hole in one at the 11th hole at Murray Downs in 2017. He had two third place finishes in the tournament in 2013 and 18.
Hughes, Ian Having worked with the TD at Telstra and the NAB, Ian played in 9 Masters during 2002-13. The Galway born Hughesy, had a unique style which moved the ball out a long way and saw him win a Long Drive in 2003. He shot a great first round of 39 points at Murray Downs but unfortunately faded in the next two. Part of the winning Ambrose Team in 2009.
Hughes, Steve Andrew Kennan recruited the Gunners supporter whom he met through their children at the East Kew Primary School and local Football and Basketball. Killen, David Invited from the NAB, David has played in 11 Masters from 2010. The Yering Meadows Golf Club member has been very unlucky to have been Runner Up in his first appearance in 2010 and also by a point in 2015. No doubt, his time will come. In his first ever round of the Masters in 2010 he shot 39 points to lead the field by 4. A lovely swing and excellent iron player with 5 Nearest the Pins, will soon be wearing the prized Masters jacket.
Koscuik, Ed Having worked with the TD at Telstra and the NAB, Ed played in 10 Masters from 2002-12. A very solid player from Latrobe Golf Club, Ed had a second and two third placings before having a great win in 2009 by 9 points after leading off with a 45 point first round.
Krajinovic, Ante Invited from the MCC, Ante was probably one of the fittest participants ever to grace the Masters. A very strong striker of the ball Peter holds the record for the most number of 5 stableford point holes recorded in the Masters which is unlikely to be broken. He was a wonderful team player having been victorious in 5 Ambrose Teams, and in his final year playing, shot a 42 point second round. Peter has managed Murraymasters.org since the beginning and still does a truly magnificent job.
Macolino, Vince Invited from the MCC, the Magpie has played in 3 Masters since 2016. With his mates, made history in 2019 ordering McDonalds takeaway at 1:30am before a scheduled hit off at 7:30am, and was there on time at the tee. Came second in the second round in 2019 with 36 points, and interestingly, moved from one MCC to another, ie the Melbourne Cricket Club to the Melbourne City Council.
Mahler, Peter A friend of the TD’s, Peter has played in 5 Masters from 2009. The smooth swinging Canadian from Riversdale Golf Club, has had a habit of winning on day 3 at Tocumwal on the Captain’s Course, ie 37 points in 2009, and 43 points in 2012.
Morgan, John Invited from the NAB, Morgo played in 11 Masters from 2004. For the first 5 Masters he used borrowed clubs and when the TD’s father Les Rowell passed in 2008, he was presented a set from Les’s estate. Morgo had a record breaking win in 2011 scoring 51, 46, 36 points (133) to win by 16. His iron play proved to be successful winning 5 Nearest the Pins, and also was part of a winning Ambrose Team.

The originator of the famed Masters Calcutta and Treasurer for the Punter’s Club, he has been a stalwart during the history of the Masters. His playing record is also exceptional having played in or Captained 12 Ambrose Teams, this will take a lot of beating. A three times Masters Champion, tieing with Alex Goldhagen in 2004, then individually in 2014 and 2024, a great Masters Champion.
Page, Bill From Mushroom Records and a close friend of Alex Golhagen, Bill played in the Masters in 2007. What was interesting is that he and John Morgan, both from Adelaide teamed up during celebrations as Morgo used to listen to Bill on the radio. Bill lives on Cape Schanck Golf Course and sadly doesn’t play golf now.
Paull, Brendon Invited from the MCC, the gentle giant gained the name “Tiny” whilst at the Masters which he played 4 times from 2015. He was part of the winning Ambrose Team in 2018, and a young family has taken him away from the golf course at this stage of his life.
Patrick, Glenn An incredibly close friend of the TD’s and his family, initially from the Bank of New Zealand, Glenn, the Kiwi Battler, has been amazing crossing the Tasman 11 times to play at the Masters since 2003. What great loyalty! Interestingly, in 2003 he was having trouble trying to get to Yarrawonga Golf Club from the Tullamarine Airport, so the TD reduced to tournament to 36 holes which Glenn managed to be the first lefty to win. Glenn gives it a big smack winning 4 Long Drives, being part of 3 winning Ambrose Teams and 2 Nearest the Pins.
Redman, Dave Invited from the NAB, Dave from Long Island Golf Club has participated in 14 Masters since 2007. He provided inspiration to all in 2024 having his brother drive him up after an operation on the Thursday to catch up with the Masters participants and pay his respects for the first Masters that Clive was missing. Unfortunately was so unwell overnight, his brother drove him back early in the next morning. A great and loyal advocate of the Masters. Came second to Clive in 2023 and was in three winning Ambrose Teams.

He was in 2 winning Ambrose Teams, won a long drive and shot a number of high 30’s and a 40 stableford points.

Editors Note : These bio’s make a fantastic contribution to the legacy, history and camaraderie of almost a quarter century of a truly wonderful event.

None of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of Ian Rowell (our TD), who also doubles as the handicapper, accommodation manager, provider of meat, red wine and refreshments for the annual BBQ, organiser of trophies and prizes, treasurer, record keeper and historian, transport provider, lead team selector and chief arbitrator of rules. So the one bio that seems slightly underdone… is Rowelly’s.

Many thanks Rowelly for a job well done over so many successful events. …. Pedro : Oct 2025
